The Fourth Louis Pasteur Conference on Infectious Diseases
  July 18, 2002

Microbiology / Virology

  Institut Pasteur, Paris
13-16 November 2002

The pathogenesis of infectious diseases is the sum of a large number of molecular interactions between the pathogen and its host. Faced with such complexity, most investigators, until now, have adopted reductionistic approaches in which the concepts and tools of molecular and cellular biology have been applied to the interactions of viruses, bacteria and parasites with eucaryotic cells. However, it is obvious that, eventually, infections need to be studied at the organism level. Such “integrative” approaches combine in vivo, in vitro and in silico methods to solve a specific problem. They can be performed on animal models and, whenever possible, on the patient. The Fourth Louis Pasteur Conference will explore some facets of this new era in the study of infectious diseases.
Mains topics : Microbial genes expression in vivo and the in vivo selection of mutants - The impact of genomics and proteomics on the study of microbial pathogenesis - Imaging infections in vivo - Using genetically modified animals to study the pathogenesis of infections - The subversion of body barriers by pathogens
