In order for genomics to provide novel and validated targets and provide the basis for personalized and predictive medicine, biological pathways will need to be mapped and understood. Significant challenges are to be met in understanding the pathways that exist in gene regulation and the expression and utility of proteins. More robust computational methods are required to analyze gene expression data for higher accuracy and predictive value. SNP data are being investigated for the purpose of being able to assess genetic variation in population studies in developing personalized medicine. The importance of protein structure modeling through ab initio and homology methods will be important to facilitate the functional annotation of genes and to aid rational drug design.
