  Integrated Approaches to Neuroinflammatory Diseases
  May 16, 2001

Biotechnology

The Jackson Laboratory, Lake Tahoe, California
October 29-October 31, 2001

The role of inflammatory signaling pathways in human diseases such as multiple sclerosis has been well studied. The animal model for MS, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), has been beneficial in elucidating some of the biological pathways involved in this neurodegenerative disease. One significant consequence of this effort has been an increased understanding of how the nervous system and the immune system can interact. New inflammatory signaling molecules and pathways have been implicated in diseases such as ALS, Alzheimer's and Huntington's disease which have spawned whole new areas of research and new therapeutic targets for some of the most devastating neurodegenerative conditions in humans. In addition, other animal models for autoimmune diseases have been used to develop new neurodegenerative phenotypes. This conference will highlight some of the most recent advances in our understanding of neuroinflammatory diseases, new pathways, new animal models, and new therapies derived from the efforts of investigators in diverse research fields working together.
