  GENE QUANTIFICATION
  December 05, 2000

Biotechnology

Cambridge Healthtech Institute, San Diego, California
February 12-13, 2001

The quantification of genes has grown to the stature of a mature science. We stand on the threshold between relative and absolute quantification. This will cause a ripple effect throughout the entire process—from the concomitant need for more precise sample preparation to a more complete understanding of what it is that these absolute numbers mean in the biological sense. For example, does it mean anything when we say, "Beta Actin is highly conserved," if we fail to ascribe numbers to other parameters? And can we get around sample contamination measurement interfering with sensitivity by simply setting a cutoff point before the negative controls are tripped?
