HUMAN GENETIC VARIATION

Cambridge Healthtech Institute , Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
October 16-17, 2000

Genetic variation has become part of the common vocabulalry. In his last State of the Union Address President Clinton concluded by repeating the comments of a recent biotech dinner guest who said, "We are all, regardless of race, 99.9 percent the same." This was a politically adroit but scientifically simplistic statement. What might appear to be insignificant polymorphisms in the genetic code have resulted in profound phenotypic differences. The rich mosaic of mainstream American life is predicated upon these differences, and the better we understand them, the more completely we will understand ourselves. Many issues should be examined at this early stage in understanding the human genome; for example, most commercial genetic databases exclude completely the codes for the planet’s second and fifth most populous nations, with the highest ranked nation making an appearance largely out of mercantile optimism (written on May 25, 2000, the day after the U.S. House of Representatives voted to normalize trade relations with China). By examining these variations we will progress to an understanding of what it is we mean when we reference the term The Human Condition.
