Designated for 40 hours in Category 1 of the Physician’s Recognition Award of the AMA.


COURSE INFORMATION

This course is designed specifically for physicians planning to take the Infectious Disease Subspecialty Examination of the American Board of Internal Medicine. This course is also suitable for physicians planning to take Infectious Disease subsections of other board examinations. This comprehensive course will cover clinical aspects of diseases likely to be encountered by infectious disease specialists in internal medicine, including clinical manifestations, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, epidemiology, host defense mechanisms, and antimicrobial pharmacology. Viruses, parasites, bacteria, mycobacteria, fungi, Chlamydia, and Rickettsia will be covered. Diagnosis and treatment of patients with HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, diseases of travelers, immunocompromised patients, critical care patients, organ transplant recipients, surgical consultations, and interpretation of microbiology laboratory results will be discussed. After completing the course, attendees will be more confident of their ability to perform well on the upcoming Infectious Disease Subspecialty Examination and will have improved their clinical skills.

OBJECTIVES
• To improve the test scores of physicians taking the Infectious Disease Subspecialty Examination of the American Board of Internal Medicine
• To improve clinical skills and expand clinically relevant basic knowledge of infectious disease subspecialists
• To review the important aspects and recent advances in clinical infectious disease, as selected from the range of infectious diseases encountered by physicians taking care of adult patients

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
• Fellows and postfellowship internists preparing for the Infectious Disease Subspecialty Examination of the American Board of Internal Medicine
• Internists already certified in infectious diseases who are preparing for recertification
• Internists preparing to take an Infectious Disease module as a part of recertification in internal medicine
