Promises and Limits of Reductionism in Biomedical Sciences | ||||
INSERM
, Aix les Bains, France 22-24 may 2000 |
||||
Scientists and philosophers of science will discuss reductionism as a useful research methodology for describing and understanding complex biological systems in terms of their molecular component parts. However, a biological system is not merely the sum of its parts and its functioning is always context-dependent and explainable only in terms of evolution. The limits of reductive explanations in molecular biology, genetics, evolutionary biology, psychology and molecular medicine will be highlighted. Particular attention will be given to the social implications of the human genome project. An attempt will be made to establish if reductionism is compatible with future progress in human biology and medicine. |
