There is growing recognition that one of the key ways in which companies are going to obtain maximum return on their investment in genomics is to include strong capabilities in the field of proteomics. The high throughput study of protein expression, as well as protein function, brings the researcher closer to the actual biology than studies of gene sequence or gene expression alone. Advances in studies of protein-protein interactions, quantification and comparisons of protein expression, annotated proteomic databases for human and various other cells, and advanced protein function methodologies all promise to pay off in accelerating diagnostic and therapeutic product development. Identification of important biomarkers, useful new targets, not to mention a better understanding of molecular biology, will be some of the benefits to emerge from these advances. |
