Infectious diseases remain a major cause of mortality. Aside from the recognized human pathogens causing persisting or re-emerging diseases, hospital-acquired infections due to opportunistic bacteria have developped as a major health threat during these last 30 years. The rapid proliferation of nosocomial infections, mostly in intensive care and surgery units is related to increased surgical interventions, to the outbreak of multidrug-resistant microorganisms and to the increased number of high-risk immunocompromized patients. Prophylaxis and appropriate treatments are often not started in time due to poor diagnosis, to biofilm formation on implants and to the emergence of new pathogens resulting from bacterial genetic exchange and in vivo high rate of mutagenesis. Microbiological research plays a key role in the fight against nosocomial infections. Surveillance, development of new and rapid means of microorganism identification and typing, antibiotic resistance gene identification, molecular studies of pathogenicity and biofilm formation will help to control hospital acquired infections and will be thoroughly discussed during this conference. |
