WATER, MICROBES AND HEALTH

Institut Pasteur , Paris, France
March 23-25, 2000

On the eve on the Third millennium, one of the most critical issues for mankind is to have sufficient quantities of microbiologically and chemically non polluted water available for all domestic, alimentary and industrial purposes.

Availability of microbially-safe water is a complex issue. Microbial contaminations are very diverse including pathogens which contaminate fishes and invertebrates, and microbial toxic metabolites which accumulate in such organisms. Water may act directly as a vector for microorganisms for instance for nosocomial infections. Surface biofilms, inside pipings and containers, are also an increasing problem. Warming of sea water in some areas favours proliferation of potentially pathogenic vibrios. During free time, people moves more and more to aquatic ecosystems, e.g. ponds, lakes, rivers, streams, or sea shore. Whatever the situation, due to increasing ecological concerns, people may require that these ecosystems should be biologically and chemically safe, which implies to identify pollution sources and to utilise all the preventive, and quality check measures available.

For each microbe which presents a danger, the question is how to assess and then manage the risk. As a research centre in microbiology, the Institut Pasteur has decided to dedicate an EUROCONFERENCE to these concerns. The best experts will provide the state-of-the-art on the principal microorganisms involved in food-chains, drinking water, recreation and thermal springs. The most recent technologies for detection will be presented and a special attention will be paid to the future of pathogens in liquid waste as well to the exploitation of bacterial metabolic pathways for depollution and bioremediation.

Finally, this conference devoted to water and microbes will deal with updated regulation aspects, at European and international levels.
