The prominent position of genetics in cardiovascular research is becoming increasingly established. Researchers are broadening their scope of genetic and molecular models of cardiovascular research and are using them in both clinical and applied laboratory settings (i.e. drug design). Progress continues to be made in the understanding of in vitro and in vivo transduction, relevant genes, linkage analysis, transgenic and knock-out models as well as congenic animals. Genetics will be a turning point in reassessing existent and future tools, ranging from epidemiology to molecular targeting in cardiovascular diseases. In terms of therapeutics, gene therapy is a forthcoming opportunity even in cardiovascular diseases, already becoming a reality. |
