Clinical Infection Control in Gene Therapy: A Multidisciplinary Conference | ||||
Marriott's Griffin Gate Resort
, Lexington, Kentucky October 22-23, 1999 |
||||
Gene therapy is being studied for the treatment of a variety of acquired and inherited disorders. Retroviruses, adenoviruses, poxviruses, adeno-associated viruses, herpesviruses and others are being engineered to transfer genes into humans. Treatment protocols using recombinant viruses are being introduced into clinical settings. Infection control practitioners invariably will be involved in reviewing the safety of these agents in their clinics and hospitals. To date, no widely available recommendations exist from federal or private organizations to guide infection control practitioners. This conference is designed to provide a forum for gene therapy experts to share their perspectives and experiences with infection control practitioners and others who wish to engage in clinical gene therapy protocols. Topics will include, but are not limited to, the management of patient volunteers in the ambulatory and inpatient setting, facility design, safety of health-care workers, handling of vectors by the pharmacy, housekeeping and disinfection, emergency response to accidents, coordination with outside health-care facilities including public health departments, and safety for family members and other close contacts. The goal of this working conference is to develop recommendations for clinical infection control in gene therapy. All persons interested in infection control in gene therapy are encouraged to register and attend. Targeted audiences include basic scientists from academia and industry, clinical scientists experienced in gene therapy, and infection control practitioners. The latter will include medical doctors and infection control nurses. Clinicians interested in becoming involved in gene therapy protocols are especially encouraged to attend. In addition, it is anticipated that persons involved in Environmental Health and Safety will attend. The conference will be limited to the first 200 registrants because of space constraints. |
