FUNCTIONAL GENOMICS: Applications of Genomic Technologies to the Understanding of Biological Systems | ||||

The comparative genomics of completely sequenced organisms and the use of animal models give us powerful new tools for studying biology and disease progression. The conventional approach of biology of studying one gene at a time to studying all genes and proteins in a systematic fashion is making way for a new understanding of biology, disease, and the identification of resistance and susceptibility genes. The development and application of genome-wide approaches are being utilized in functional genomics, and strategies are being employed by pharmaceutical companies for studying gene and protein circuits and interactions. This new knowledge will be critical in the effort to engineer compounds that are effective as a means for disease prevention, or treatment of illness. |
