WELCOME MESSAGE

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

Rejection still plays a major role in transplanted organ survival despite significant progress in immunosuppression treatment. The kidney is by no means exception in this.
Much effort has been invested by world experts over the last decade to standardize practical, simple, reproducible, and clinically relevant histopathological criteria for the diagnosis of renal allograft rejection by needle biopsy, which remains the most definitive diagnostic procedure. Stimulated by standardization efforts in heart and lung transplantation, the Banff attempts to define certain thresholds more precisely and to specify grades of rejection and borderline changes signify major progress and have proved to be useful, although the opinion has been expressed that they still have limitations and seem to be rather complex in practice. The honorary guest lecturer, Professor Steen Olsen, from Denmark, who will present two introductory overview talks at this International Conference on Transplantation, has contributed significantly to the development of modern nephropathology and has played a very prominent role in the group of international experts for establishing and standardizing of rejection criteria. The Conference will also provide opportunities for pathologists and clinicians from Slovenia and other countries to present their own scientific results, to exchange practical experiences and to discuss diagnostically difficult cases. It will be open to practicing specialists in different branches of medicine and to residents who would like to upgrade their knowledge about the very complex pathology of organ transplantation. We expect that the Conference will demonstrate the importance of close collaboration between clinicians and pathologists in everyday clinical praxis as well as in scientific projects.
The organizers are honored and proud to be the hosts of the Conference and will make every effort to ensure the best conditions for the realization of the scientific programme and social contacts between participants, in the modern premises of the Medical Faculty and University Medical Centre in Ljubljana. Furthermore, you are all kindly invited to enjoy the architectural heritage of Ljubljana and the picturesque countryside of tiny Slovenia. We sincerely wish that your attendance at the International Conference on Transplantation with Emphasis on Kidney will be a fruitful, enjoyable and memorable experience.
