December 13-17th 1998

Invited Speakers: R. Gordon Douglas, Patrice Courvalin, Robin A. Weiss, Jan Verhoef, Staffan Normark, Howard E. Gendelman, W. Gary Tarpley, W. Michael Scheld, Z. Ioav Cabantchik, Dan M. Granoff,

Program:
The program is divided into three main morning sessions, each focussing on one aspect of infectious diseases. Each morning session contains three Keynote Lectures, a Poster Session, and ample opportunity to discuss scientific topics. In the afternoons, there will be two parallel Oral Sessions covering Hot Topics in the following four fields:

Infection and inflammation as causes of disease: brand-new infections

As we approach the turn of the millennium, we are unexpectedly witnessing the emergence of old and new infections. Etiologies of a number of infectious diseases, first thought to be of non-infectious origin are being unraveled. At the same time, non-infectious causes of several diseases are being defined.

Resistance: Successes of the past - Problems for the future

Nearing the end of the 20th century, we are seeing the emergence of infections caused by highly resistant microbes. After 60 successful years, antibiotics are no longer miracle drugs.

The cutting edge of bacterial virulence

There has been an enormous increase in the past few years in our knowledge of the pathogenesis of infections. This knowledge has evolved from organ and cell involvement to the discovery of specific molecules on both cells and pathogens important in the pathogenesis of infection.

Eradication of infections in the 21th century: Successes of the past - Promise for the future

The challenge for the 21st century will be to link our increased knowledge of the pathogenesis of disease to our daily clinical practice with the ultimate aim of fully eradicating infections.

The Social Program will be oriented towards the celebration of the inaugural address of Christiaan Eijkman.
