Program:
Program Goals and Objectives
Review the neurobiology and ontogeny of sleep.
Provide a state of the art review on influence of the role of REM
sleep in breathing disorders.
Formulate hypotheses as to how increased upper airway
resistance may relate to SIDS and sleep apnea later in life.
Present medical and surgical approaches to the management of
infants and children with sleep disordered breathing.
Present and discuss outstanding scholarly research on apnea of
infancy published during 1998.
Critically examine the potential roles of gastro-esophageal reflux,
epileptic seizures, intentional suffocation and upper airway
obstruction in apparent life-threatening events in infants.
Give an update on the latest results coming from the collaborative
home infant monitoring evaluation (CHIME) study.
Present and discuss original scientific work on apnea and other
sleep related breathing disorders during a poster session.
Review developmental aspects related to the control of breathing.
Provide insights into future directions in apnea research.
Emphasize diagnostic and management approaches through review
of unusual clinical cases.
