Program:
Detecting the presence of a specific gene sequence may be sufficient for
some applications, but increasingly the demand is for quantitation of the
number of copies of a given gene. The initial driving force for quantitation
has been viral load determination, although its value extends to many other
diagnostic and research applications as well. Advances in kinetic PCR,
reagents for homogeneous assays, improved standards, and greater
sensitivity are among the many technical developments that will be covered.
Practical experience with viral load and other applications will also be
discussed. Another major development involves the simultaneous
quantification of many genes, as required for gene expression profiling. The
leading approaches based on sequencing, sampling, chips, and microarrays
will all be compared.
