CANCER GENETICS

Cambridge Healthtech Institute , Washington, D.C.
September 29-30, 1997

Program:
The era of molecular diagnostics in cancer is approaching. In order to prevent cancer, we need to
understand the disease on a molecular basis and diagnose it early. This will be accomplished through
the creation of a cancer gene index, which will categorize the multitude of genes associated with
cancer. Libraries of cDNA expression in cancer are being constructed, and high-speed technologies
will track molecular processes in a cancer cell. Rather than characterizing cancer on the basis of the
tissue of origin and the appearance of cells biopsied, it will be possible with the new techniques being
developed to detect precancerous growths and make a molecular diagnosis on which an effective
treatment will be made. The overall direction of the National Cancer Institute, an overview of
gene-based diagnostics, the profiling of cancer genes, and the newest gene-based therapeutic drugs
will be discussed.
