This annual multi-specialty, interdisciplinary course addresses clinical and basic neuroscience advances in the epidemiology, etiology, identification and management of children with mental retardation. The proposed audience includes: pediatricians, child neurologists and psychiatrists, educators, psychologists, speech pathologists, audiologists, school and public health nurses, social workers and other professionals involved in the diagnosis, treatment and management of children and adults with mental retardation.
After completion of this course, the participants should -
* be aware of the importance and success of steps to prevent mental retardation
* be familiar with the implications of recent advances in the neurosciences as they impact on our understanding of mental retardation
* be knowledgeable of the new techniques for determining the etiology of mental retardation
* recognize that the term "mental retardation" envelops a significant number of behavioral and cognitive phenotypes
* be aware of the educational strategies to prepare for the transitioning of persons with mental retardation to the community
