NOVEL HIV THERAPEUTIC STRATEGIES

Cambridge Healthtech Institute , McLean, VA USA
November 20, 1996 - November 21, 1996

Program:
Traditional approaches for developing vaccines or antiviral drugs for treatment of HIV infection have thus far failed to provide effective results. For vaccines, the ability of HIV to suppress, destroy, and evade the immune system represents a huge challenge. It has been possible to generate immune responses, but there has been little success in developing responses that prove to be protective. For drugs, the ability of HIV to mutate and develop resistance has been one of the most serious obstacles, besides that of dose-limiting toxicity of most compounds tested thus far. This program aims to explore what can be learned from what has failed to work in the past, in order to point the way to novel targets, mechanisms, and approaches that may prove more effective. Strategies that might overcome drug resistance, ways to block destruction of the immune system, and other ways to exploit vulnerabilities of the virus need to be examined and tested if significantly better results are to be achieved within a reasonable time frame.
