GENE FUNCTION ANALYSIS

Cambridge Healthtech Institute , San Diego, CA USA
October 28, 1996 - October 29, 1996

Program:
Advances in high-throughput sequencing, particularly of cDNA libraries, are providing new gene sequences at a rapid pace. The capacity for determination of functional activity of a gene, however, must be enhanced to avoid a serious bottleneck. The use of model organisms, transgenic knock-outs and knock-ins, in combination with increasingly powerful comparative bioinformatics, will all be needed. In addition, innovative new strategies are being developed, with an emphasis on approaches that provide speed and minimal human intervention. These advances will all be needed if the full benefits of the Human Genome Project and other sequencing efforts are to be realized.
