OSTEOPOROSIS

Cambridge Healthtech Institute , Philadelphia, PA USA
October 15, 1996 - October 16, 1996

Program:
Osteoporosis, the gradual loss of bone mass, is the result of an imbalance between the normal processes of bone formation and resorption. This loss is typically asymptomatic until fractures occur, and thus improved diagnostics will be covered in detail. Current therapy, such as calcium supplementation and hormone replacement, is only able to slow down such losses, while newer approaches that promise to reverse the imbalance and produce gains in bone mass would be most beneficial. Coverage of improved hormone-related compounds, as well as growth factors, cytokines, and other strategies for regulating the relative activity of osteoclasts and osteoblasts will also be featured.
