Program:
December 1995

Dear Colleagues:

Once more, San Francisco will be the setting for the 1996 Cell
Biology Meeting, and the Program Committee and I are happy to
present what we believe to be a very exciting meeting.

Putting together a program for both the American Society for Cell
Biology and the International Federation for Cell Biology was not
easy. There is so much new and exciting data and so many
deserving scientists who should get a chance to present. The
National and International Committees debated the program
rigorously and they deserve much credit. We tried not to have
too many "repeats" of the last two years. But I must admit that
in some cases, it was difficult not to include a few who were
particularly in demand. We are pleased with and proud of the
final program. We have tried to preserve the traditional cell
biology subjects but to also introduce new and, at times, still
controversial topics. We tried to remind ourselves that
prejudices need to be put aside and a fresh look given to the
unconventional. If this displeases anyone, the fault lies with
me alone (or with me and the President who stood by me!).

We have increased the number of Concurrent Symposia speakers and
changed some of the topics to cover current topics and allow for
more platform presentations. In addition, we have introduced
morning and evening sessions with prominent scientists so that
there can be personal interaction and increased opportunity for
face-to-face discussions. In the Exhibit Hall, attendees will
be able to talk about products and services with representatives
of over 350 companies (whose participation helps substantially
to finance the Congress & Meeting). Please do visit the
exhibits.

A successful meeting will depend, as always, on your active and
enthusiastic participation. We hope you will find the program as
exciting as we do, and that you will want to contribute to it by
submitting an abstract of your recent work for a poster
presentation. The scheduling allows you to take advantage of
air fares that require a Saturday night stay, and the ambiance
of San Francisco combined with the scientific enticements of the
program should make this a memorable meeting that you will not
want to miss! See you there.

Best wishes,

Mina Bissell Chair, 1996 Program Committee

GENERAL INFORMATION

The 6th International Congress on Cell Biology & the
36th American Society for Cell Biology Annual Meeting will take
place in San Francisco, California, from
Saturday, December 7-Wednesday, December 11, 1996. All
activities will be scheduled at the Moscone Convention Center,
747 Howard Street.

San Francisco is host to more than eight million
visitors a year. Its attractions range from
Fisherman's Wharf to Ocean Beach, from the Golden Gate Bridge to
Golden Gate Park. The city is also within
easy driving distance of the high Sierra resorts of
Lake Tahoe and Yosemite, the scenic Monterey-Carmel
Peninsula, California's wine country of Napa and
Sonoma, the mining towns of the Mother Lode, Sausalito, the
Redwood Empire, and the spectacular Mendocino
Coast.

As one of the premier gateways of the world, San
Francisco has a sophisticated and inviting allure. The city's
international birthright is evident everywhere in its ethnic
pageantry, restaurants, street names and neighborhoods.

The city is blessed with a temperate marine climate and enjoys
mild weather year-round. Temperatures seldom
rise above 70o F (21oC) or fall below 40o F (5oC).
Visitors are most comfortable with a light jacket or coat. An
all-weather coat will take the chill off cool evenings.

REGISTRATION FEES
The registration fee for scientists and students
includes entrance to all Congress & Meeting sessions, exhibits,
the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, the
opening reception, and the briefcase, which will
contain the Program and Abstracts Issue. Students must have
their department head or principal investigator sign the
registration form in order to qualify for the reduced student
fee.

The fee for accompanying persons (family members)
includes entrance to the hospitality room, exhibits, evening
snacks (cash bar will be available), the
Opening and Closing Ceremonies, and the opening
reception. The fee does not include Congress & Meeting
publications or admission to scientific sessions.

Youth under 18 years of age accompanied by a registrant will not
be required to pay a registration fee.
However, tickets for special events and tours may be purchased
for them.

Participants are urged to register in advance using the advanced
registration form. This registration form
must be completed and received by the ASCB by
September 6, 1996. After this date participants may
register on-site beginning Saturday, December 7, 1996 at 9:00 AM
in the Moscone Convention Center.

Advance registrants will receive a confirmation of
registration and a preliminary program. This
confirmation must be presented at the Advance
Registration Desk in the Moscone Convention Center to receive the
official badge, publications, and, if
ordered, tickets for social and tour events.

A receipt and preliminary program will be mailed to
advance registrants only in November. Advance
registrants may cancel participation and request a
refund (except for tours) in writing which must be
accompanied by the registration receipt and be
postmarked no later than December 6, 1996.

Concurrent Symposia Abstract Codes

The Plenary Symposia and Poster Sessions will be complemented by
twenty-four Concurrent Symposia reflecting issues of current
importance in cell biology. Because we expect a large
participation from scientists from outside the U.S., the Program
Committee determined much of the Concurrent Symposium programs to
ensure the interest of all participants. The co-chairs of the
symposia may still select an outstanding abstract for
presentation in the sessions.

Therefore, if you feel you have unusually novel and exciting data
and that you can present your work clearly and cohesively in a
short time, check the box 'Concurrent Symposium or Poster' on the
Abstract Form. The following Concurrent Symposia are planned:

C01 Genetic approaches to human disease
C02 The RNA world
C03 Cell biology of infectious diseases
C04 Small G proteins and trafficking
C05 The cytoskeleton and its associated proteins
C06 Nuclear architecture and higher controls of
gene transcription
C07 Molecular mechanisms in epithelial-mesenchymal
interactions
C08 Extracellular matrix: regulation and cell
behavior
C09 Proteolysis and biological control
C10 Endocytosis
C11 Signals to and from the ER
C12 Senescence
C13 Growth inhibition signalling
C14 Heat shock and chaperones
C15 Cellular shape & function
C16 Cell-cell interactions and junctions
C17 Molecular studies of neuron target
interactions
C18 Structural biology of membrane pumps,
channels, and receptors
C19 Telomeres and telomerases
C20 Methylation and imprinting in mammalian cells
C21 Adhesion receptors
C22 Caveolae and GPI-anchored membrane
proteins
C23 Silencing
C24 Developmental biology of gene expression
