Program:

The National Society of Genetic Counselor's 15th Annual Education Conference will be held October 26 - 29, 1996 at the Grand Hyatt on Union Square in San Francisco. A 11/2 day short course on neurogenetics will precede the Society's annual conference.

The conference will address genetic counselors' diversifying professional needs and workplace settings. Registrants will be challenged to examine assumptions about what genetic counselors do, why and how they do it and what the social implications of their work are in times when technologic breakthroughs are regular occurrences. Poised on the threshhold of a dynamic future, genetic counselors and related professionals attending this conference will acknowledge the changes that lie ahead and nurture the evolution of the theory and practice of genetic counselors.

After attending the conference, participants will be able to:
* Describe the most recent advances in genetic knowledge and their impact on genetic counseling and patient care,
* Discuss the impact of our changing healthcare system on the practice and cost-effectiveness of genetic counseling, and
* Identify ethical conflicts created by genetic counseling and genetic technology as they apply to the interests of society.

In addition to plenary sessions and interactive workshops, the conference will include practice-based symposia, bringing professionals working in the same specialty together to discuss clinical and professional issues, share resources and build professional alliances.
NSGC has scheduled a Short Course, "Unlocking the Secrets of Neurogenetics" on October 25 - 26, immediately preceding the Annual Education Conference.
This 11/2 day short course will provide genetic counselors and related professionals with clinical information about neurogenetic disorders including: ataxias, phacomatoses, neuromuscular disorders, muscular dystrophies, Alzheimer disease and familial dementias. The course will also review neurologic terminology, neuroanatomy and neurodiagnostic procedures.

After the course, participants will be able to:
* provide an overview of neurogenetic disorders and review specific conditions that may be seen in neurogenetic clinics
* become familiar with the associated clinical terminology, common components of a clinical neurological examination and frequently-used neurodiagnostic procedures.
* examine the counseling aspects of working with individuals with or at risk for neurogenetic disorders.
