Program:
The optimal clinical outcome of orthpaedic implants in orthopaedic surgery is critically dependent on synergism of biomechanics and responding cellular response. This conference will focus on the interface of biomechanics, cell biology and growth factors. The emphasis will be on how mechanical signals influence cells and attendant gene expression. Therefore, attention will be focused on how mechanical signals interact with cell surface receptors, extracellular matrix, cytoskeleton and nuclear matrix. The sessions deal with:
Cell Biological Principles
Growth and Morphogenetic Proteins
Cartilage
Mechanical Loading
OBJECTIVES
The conference will seek to:
* Identify novel approaches to the design of orthopaedic implants based on biomechanics and cell biology
* Recognize the research priorities in the interface of biomechanics, cellular response and growth factors
* Stimulate new research directions and collaboration between industry and academia in the actions of mechanical stimuli on musculoskeletal tissues, and
* Provide research recommendations for new interdisciplinary approaches.
