Program:

Program Overview

The recent identification of genes that confer susceptibility to a number
of adult onset cancers has made the dream of predictive testing for cancer
risk a reality. These discoveries also hold the promise of greater
understanding of the basic mechanisms by which cancers arise. However,
these strides present novel challenges to clinicians integrating the
discoveries into practice and educating patients about the power and
problems inherent in doing so.
This program will provide an overview of genetics in relation to clinical
practice, as well as updates on the genetics of breast, ovarian, colon and
thyroid cancers and melanoma. Additional presentations will provide a
framework for utilizing this information in practice, discuss insurance
industry views of reimbursement for predictive testing and its relationship
to insurability, and give an overview of the ethical issues surrounding
predictive testing.
This program will be of interest to any health care provider likely to
encounter patients with a family history of cancer, including but not
limited to medical and surgical oncologists, family practitioners, general
surgeons, internists and obstetricians-gynecologists. Nurses, genetic
counselors and other providers with similar patient populations are
encouraged to attend.

Program Objectives

At the completion of this conference, participants should be able to:
1. Understand the basic principles of cancer genetics as they relate to clinical practice.
2. Review recent progress in the genetics of specific tumor types.
3. Identify patients who are suitable candidates for susceptibility testing for specific cancers and discuss the counseling needs of these patients.
4. Examine the ethical, legal and social implications of genetic testing for cancer risk.
