Development of SMALL MOLECULE MIMETIC DRUGS

Cambridge Healthtech Institute , Washington, DC USA
May 2-3, 1996

Program:
Biomolecules such as growth factors or insulin, as well as peptide ligands or antibodies, are all being developed as pharmaceutical products, but these biologicals can be expensive to produce and often lack convenient pharmacological properties such as oral availability. The development of small molecules that mimic the active portion of such biomolecules provides a very attractive strategy for next generation drug development. Discussion of the tools and strategies being used to develop such drugs based on biological templates, including agonist as well as antagonist compounds, will be included. Case studies will provide examples of drugs undergoing clinical evaluation that were developed using this approach.
