CORD BLOOD STEM CELLS: Banking, Expansion & Transplants

Cambridge Healthtech Institute , San Francisco, CA, USA
October 16-18, 1995

Program:
There has been a growing use of bone marrow transplants to
reconstitute a defective immune system of patients undergoing
intensive chemotherapy, but there is a variety of limitations
to this approach. Early results with the use of stem cells
from cord blood for this purpose have been very encouraging
and offer attractive advantages compared with bone marrow
or peripheral blood as a source of stem cells. Key issues
that must be addressed for large-scale banking of cord blood
stem cells to be carried out, along with the latest results
of stem cell expansion, genetic modification and clinical
experience, will be highlighted.
