Program:
The aim of this course is to review recent advances in cancer genetics, based on the notion - now an established fact - that cancer is a genetic disorder of somatic cells. The course will focus particularly on the relative roles of inherited mutations and of somatic mutations in the pathogenesis of malignancy. In order to achieve its educational objectives, the course will comprise three parts: FOUNDATIONS: concentrating on the structure of the genome, the function of genes, and the mechanism of oncogenesis; METHOLODOLOGIES: for analyzing the above, improving diagnosis of cancer by mutation analysis and for improving therapy by gene transfer; and SYSTEMIC REVIEW: reporting up-to-date knowledge on individual types of cancer.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES: At the end of this course participants should be able to:

1. Understand and explain how advances in our knowledge of the human genome has helped and can help to elucidate the molecular basis of cancer.
2. Assess the likely relative contributions of inherited and acquired genetic changes in the prevalence of cancer.
3. Assess how current knowledge of the genetic basis of cancer can impact their approach to patients in terms of diagnosis, prognosis, and counselling.
4. Understand and explain how current technologies can help to monitor patients with cancer.
5. Optimize the ability to explain to patients to what extent they and their families may be at increased or decreased risk of various forms of malignant diseases.
6. Advise patients with inherited cancer susceptibility syndromes about prophylaxis, optimal treatment, and implications for their own offspring.
