The National Society of Genetic Counselors will sponsor a one-day short course on cancer genetic counseling Friday, October 24 at the Marriott Inner Harbor, Baltimore, Maryland. "Cancer Genetic Counseling: A New Era Unfolds" is targeted to genetics and oncology professionals with varying levels of
expertise and experience.
The conference will utilize diverse educational formats to address critical issues in cancer risk counseling and testing. Presentations will be
case-oriented, and the overall approach will be skills-based and concept-driven to underscore applications to clinical practice.
The goals of the short course are to enable participants to:

* Apply principles of pedigree analysis, cancer biology, and epidemiology to cancer risk assessment;
* Evaluate the appropriateness of various testing strategies for diverse patient populations and interpret results in the context of a patient's personal and family history;
* Assess the strengths and limitations of available options for cancer screening and prevention in high risk individuals; and
* Explore the psychological, legal, social, and ethical issues germane to cancer risk notification

One Continuing Education Unit has been approved.
