BASIC TECHNIQUES IN MOLECULAR MYCOBACTERIOLOGY

American Type Culture Collection , Rockville, Maryland, USA
April 16-19, 1996

Invited Speakers: Dr. Robert Ollar, Department of Neurology, St. Vincent's
Hospital; Tamara Feldblyum, M.S. (Laboratory Director), Collection Scientist.

Program:
An introductory level course that is intended for scientists and clinicians without any
previous experience in mycobacterial molecular biology.

This program will be a four-day workshop. It will be largely hands-on benchwork and will
include:

1. Mycobacterial genomic DNA isolation

2. Agarose electrophoretic analysis of intact genomic DNA isolates

3. Generating mycobacterial RFLP's via digest of genomic DNA, electrophoresis of
genomic DNA digest. Southern blotting and probing of genomic DNA digest with
non-radioactive labelled probes

4. Use of PCR for detecting mycobacterial presence in a clinical specimen.

Lectures and slides will include troubleshooting, applications for mycobacterial RFLP's
and applications for PCR in mycobacteriology.
