Program:
This three-day hands-on workshop program is geared to provide clinical laboratory
personnel and virologists with an overview of the knowledge and techniques required for
the rapid and accurate laboratory diagnosis of many medically important viruses. This
year, the Workshop will also incorporate a "stand alone" one-day seminar on the
"Application of Current Technologies to the Isolation and Rapid Diagnosis of Human
Pathogens". The seminar should be relevant to a wide range of individuals from clinical,
government, academic and industrial labs with interests in the area of diagnostic
virology. Those new to the field of diagnostic virology or with limited cell culture
experience will find the laboratory portion of the workshop especially valuable.

Lectures will emphasize the laboratory diagnosis of infections due to enteroviruses,
herpesviruses, respiratory viruses, diarrhea viruses and chlamydia infection. Also
covered will be the laboratory diagnosis of HIV infection and continuing advances in
laboratory technology.

Laboratory exercises will emphasize the use of cell cultures for virus isolation and
identification through CPE, host range, HA and FA. Exercises or demonstrations will
also cover centrifugation-enhanced shell vial cultures and rapid detection of viral antigen
by immunoassays using monoclonal and polycolonal antibodies.
