Insect Cell Culture and Recombinant Protein Expression with the Baculovirus Expression Vector System

American Type Culture Collection , Rockville, Maryland
October 3-6, 1995

Invited Speakers: Faculty: Thomas Davis, Ph.D., (Workshop Director), Boyce Thompson Institute; Tom Koval, Ph.D., National Council on Radiation Protection; Kevin McKenna, M.Sc., Boyce Thompson Institute.

Program:

This four-day course is designed to introduce the beginner to insect cell culture and its
use with the baculovirus expression vector system for the production of recombinant
protein. The program will combine lectures and laboratory work which will take the
participant from establishing and maintaining insect cell cultures to optimization of
recombinant protein production.

Lecture topics will include an overview of insect cell culture, care and maintenance of
insect cells, baculovirus biology, generation, detection, and purification of recombinant
virus, recombinant protein production and post-translational modifications, and scale-up
of the baculovirus expression vector system.

Laboratory techniques will include the handling of insect cells, recombinant virus
identification and amplification, transfection techniques, spinner flask and bioreactor
scale-up systems, and isolation of viral DNA from infected cells.
