Our pro-active NGO working in Central Asia in the former Soviet socialist republics (e. g. Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan & Ajerbaijan) and Europe: Germany, Austria and E. Europe in food and energy. The whole scenario involving sugar-milling in the Philippines (also in Thailand & Vietnam) is moving towards diversification of businesses from simply sugar-milling (viz. granulated and raw sugar production and molasses bi-products), to use of green tops and bagasse for animal feeding for livestock production, viz. meat & milk, to fishpond mariculture for canning, eco-cultural-recreational tourism including rest stops for recreation, dining and accomodation and touring and now energy diversification (e. g. petrol alternatives collectively called polycarboxyols and biodiesel).
At this time we are surveying any possibilities with perspectives in arability in land area (ha.) for switchgrass, wheat straw, sorghum straw and bagasse for steam/SO2 and ionic liquid pre-treatment (a very efficient and advanced tech.) towards deconstruction of feedstock towards lignin separation from its saccharolytic fraction to make energy-dense iso-butanol (Clostridium spp.) and higher-grade iso-pentenol (experimental E. coli spp.) with experimental microbial culture fermentation including scale-up with algae.
There are issues that need further investigation: 1) feedstock type and amenability to pre-treatment type in terms of optimal process efficiency, cost-effectiveness and feasibility (including sustainability such as solvent recylables with ionic liquid fractionation, and 2) pre-treatment methods amenability to feed-grade, food-grade and energy-grade processes such as biological grade purity, amenability to feedstock-grade for starch amylose processing and purity (vs contamination) to microbial energy fermentation for bioenergy production.
We are also working with the spin-offs of foods enzyme technology in the former Russo-Soviet socialist republics with our LignozymTech ® derived from anoxy eco-habitats for that same purpose in food preparation, processing and treatment.
