Description:

The literature in phyto-pharma is growing as we introduce ionophoric foods driven by microbial fermented foods such as dairy, alcoholic beverages, wines and spirits, as examples, conferring health benefits from various prebiotics, functional foods (e. g. PUFAS) and phytochemicals.

Here in the Philippines, the rich, diverse wildlife in flora and fauna presented promises great potential for new finds in at least the several thousand of new wonder drugs both major and axenic to other drug agents currently formulated for the drug market.

For example, there is a natural sourced drug that is a much more powerful anaesthetic compared to morphine currently on the market.  There are currently reported 119 distinct drug agents originally derived of plant origin.  Examples include analgesics [aspirin, acetaminophen, codeine]; Parkinson's treatment, L-dopa; childhood Leukaemia and Hodgkin's disease [vinblastine, vincristine]; cancer [Taxol]; cardiovascular disease [Lopressor (R), Ciba Geigy, Lanoxin (R), Burroughs Wellcome] and allergies [Theo-Dur (R), Key Pharmaceuticals].

The attenuation of endothelial dysfunction, decreases in blood pressure, reductions in platelet aggregation and improvements in insulin sensitivity [see: Skye Blue Publications, Hum-molgen.de, on insulin resistance theories] have proven effective derived from tea, grapes, wine and cocoa due to flavonols of plant origin.  At Skye Blue, we are planning to field test various flavonol variants as nutritionals instigating correlates with probable drug target studies as has been proposed for fructan-Vit D tied investigations. This food-grade ingredient (flavonols) along with fructans is touted as a health food additive in our dietetic food drink product Frescana-C (R) from GMO food-grade and enviro-grade grapefruit [see: VITRIA NUTRI-HEALTH & FOOD LABS].

There was recently official communication for collaboration and development to market of a new cancer drug, which we mention here called 'Vit J' [see: Ernst-Maria App].  Although we do not present here further evidence of its efficacy and claims from the scientific literature the data given to us on this new find is astounding considering how plant agents of origin are apparently fortuitous in the human body in treating disease as most doctors of homeopathy or alternative medicine claim.

SKYEVIEW: The continuing story of inflammation and its role with fructan and Vit D in heart disease, diabetes type 2 and colo-rectal cancer has now focused in the Philippines in their commonly held spp. Annona muricata Linn (guayabano, in the common dialect) leaf or tea and fruit extract that have demonstrated to be anti-inflammatory in animal studies and should be further investigated for active substances (viz. except toxins, alkaloids) such as annonaceous acetogenins that may help in reducing insulin resistance, atherosclerotic plaques and inflammation in the lower bowel leading to colo-rectal cancer.  It should be added that guayabano extract kills cancer cells and also indirectly leads to increased insulin production in T2 diabetic cases.

SKYEVIEW: What wonders Filipino phytopharm can offer from our plethora from forests, orchards, farms and fields and its native flora.  We'll be sure to work away as to what active substances (e. g. in this case, Annonaceous acetogenins) have been thus researched in our much loved and luscious guayabano fruit - and their 'tea leaves', that controls the inflammation response, at Skye Blue, as has similarly been found with fructan and Vit D and what perspectives this offers in terms of small organic molecules and drugs in molecular medicine.

SKYEVIEW: Glycaemic load (GL) on liver, muscle stores, nutrigenomics, and using phama with small molecular leads for drug discovery.  N status and fat (in obesity) have been of first interest to researchers alike and clinicians studying the betterment of nutritional status and health.  Recently, however, it has caught the attention of Skye Blue regards the 'carbohydrate (CHO) status', in particular, gluconeogenic processing with a high-protein diet and its relation to immunity (and to chronic inflammatory diseases), cancers, neurological function and its relationship to the aging process, and in general, and will be further investigated in the new fields of functional foods and nutrigenomics and drug discovery.  It is speculated that there is conferred with the added caloric GL with gluconeogenesis after fasting (AM) from glycogen stores in liver and muscle, over the long term, that hormonal factors, cell signaling and transcriptional factors (TFs) and expression of the metabolosome and the study of small molecule lead targets for drug discovery, will lead to advances in areas with therapeutics. The observation about food and eating in cultures as with Spanish-related countries dictates an inherency in appetite or tendency for hi-protein dietary intake such as during breakfast (e. g. beans, rice, eggs, corned beef, ham, bacon) which supports the contention that appetite could be regulated for protein, an essential requirement as such, but also 'spills over' to gluconeogenesis or carbohydrate (CHO) depoting in liver and muscle.

SKYEVIEW: The most recent stories of genetic engineering addressing the biggest problem facing humans today, that is, malnutrition, admidst food security concerns (hunger would be another issue) will be projected to shift from addressing the pro-poor populations in developing countries to an inevitable growing middle class with growing health crisis concerns related to more affluent life styles, a growing complex, more polluted environment, climate change, encroaching overpopulation, etc. With respect to foods we have termed this at Skye Blue to be "PHNs" or protective health nutritionals for this growing health market amongst the affluent middle class in developing countries, for multi-nationals at home and abroad to exploit to get an ROI on food-feed crop R&D development. Food enrichment with "PHNs" include: 1) ergosterol (D2) in fortified plant products like soya beans **, 2) fructans in vegetables **, 3) beta-carotene in rice for VitA as anti-cancer agent and including milk, 4) milk proteins (anti-inflammatory) conceivably genome edited in GMO cows that are to be USDA approved based on public opinion in the near future with animal biotech cos. **, 5) VitE, anti-cancer, in cows milk , 6) Fe and finally 7) PUFAs in var. vegetable species. Food fortification could be a second-generation product by initial food hunger/malnutrition initiatives with international groups or organizations and government organization in developing countries in <tandem> with the new genome editing and what this new technological advance can bring to genetic engineering: its food safety, biosafety and environmental risks and public acceptability to regulatory bodies in the USA like the USDA and its vision for modern agriculture of the future. ( ** these indicate Skye Blue's desire to find initiative in areas for this type of research including that for SkyeBlue's.)

SKYEVIEW: We are introducing the possibility of further (see: above) fortifying plant tissue or products such as soya proteins with VitD precursors for activatable VitD, that is, ergosterol (D2), given that there is still a need to supplement the dietary intake of VitD precursors in foods such as egg yolk, fish oil, butter and milk which have cholesterol which can serve as precursors following the sequence 7-dehydrocholesterol which upon skin irradiation is converted to D3 and then in the liver to 25(OH)VitD and finally in kidney to calcitriol or 1,25(OH)VitD. Alternatively, there are other ways of supplying additional amounts of VitD precursors such as in the supplementation with D2 in bread. Since cholesterol is a raging topic of interest as always in terms of "staunching" its source in the diet the opportunities offered by plant VitD precursors is very exciting indeed such as ergosterol (D2) in both plant products as in soya beans as in soya milk and animal such as bovine cows milk.

SKYEVIEW: Anti-oxidants have reached a fevered pitch in foods recently including "golden rice" with VitA precursors (beta-carotene) and now with herbs and spices for popular drinks with coffee, teas, colas, etc. The market by all surmises is enormous. We are talking about fat-soluble beta-carotene, plant sterol precursor to VitD, and VitE and flavonoids. Polyphenols can be added as water-soluble constituents. All these preventative health nutritionals (PHNs) have been implicated in alleviating stress-related cancer-causing agents in air, water, food and natural body-functions in modern life. Unfortunately, both older transgenetic techniques (regulated) are used for this modification and in addition genome edition transgenesis techniques (unregulated).
